Fax over IP refers to the ability to originate a fax on a standard PSTN TDM-based connection and have it terminate on an IP-enabled connection. From a technical perspective, Fax over IP uses the T.38 protocol for carrying fax data over a packet-switched network.

Fax over IP is subject to a number of issues relating to interoperability and thus overall reliability as this article discusses.

TelcoBridges and Fax over IP

TelcoBridges has designed a solution known as TB Fax Server that leverages TelcoBridges' Tdev hardware, its support for transcoding between PCM and T.38 (via optional VoIP modules), the TB StreamServer application and third party application, Spandsp, to provide an end-to-end solution.
