Fax over IP refers to the ability to originate a fax on a standard PSTN TDM-based connection and have it terminate on an IP-enabled connection. From a technical perspective, Fax over IP uses the T.38 protocol for carrying fax data over a packet-switched network. TelcoBridges now has support for V.34 (33.6 kbps) fax transmission on all it's products.
Fax over IP is subject to a number of issues relating to interoperability and thus overall reliability as this article discusses.
